A branch of the United Nations, WIPO primarily creates and administers
international treaties for the protection of intellectual property.
The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) is probably the best-known treaty
that allows for a patent applicant to simultaneously file and start prosecution
in an administrative sense internationally while preserving foreign filing
rights in PCT member countries, of which there are over 180 in number currently,
for approximately 30 months after the first patent application file date.
For foreign patent filing, the PCT is usually
the first choice when greater than two foreign countries are desired.
WIPO is also involved with international treaties concerning copyrights,
trademarks, electronic commerce, arbitration, and private dispute settlements.
